Kathryn Kirk

Kathryn Kirk

Master of International Public Health

I completed an Internship with the Fred Hollows Foundation – Sydney head office as part of my Master of International Public Health. The main reasons I enrolled in the internship was to put the knowledge and skills learnt in the degree into practice and establish networks in the field of International Public Health.

Master of Public Health (International Health Specialisation)

I was initially drawn to the internship program by the high calibre placements on offer. I was placed with the Emergency and Humanitarian Action Unit, South East Asia Regional Office, World Health Organization, New Delhi, India. I also wanted to fully realise the Master of Public Health stream I had enrolled in (International Health) with some practical developing world experience. The internship program was a perfect way to blend my global health aspirations with practical and academic work – the internship counted as six units of credit towards my MPH.

Jananie Balendran WHO Internship

Jananie Balendran

Master of International Public Health

My internship experience at the WHO has already altered my career plans and encouraged me to direct my energy into a specific public health area I am quite passionate about. Additionally, having come from a largely clinical background, working for a UN organisation has provided me with a differing perspective on how to drive change within the public health field. I believe this directed public health focus combined with the leadership and management skills I learnt from working within a large global organisation will hold me in good stead for my future career.

Alison Kerr

Master of International Public Health / Master of Public Health (Dual Degree)

I am currently studying a Master of International Public Health (MIPH) and Master of Public Health (MPH). I have significant experience working clinically in health, but public health is a new area for me. I enrolled in the internship program as I thought it would provide an amazing opportunity to consolidate knowledge I had learnt in the MIPH/MPH program, with practical experience. The opportunity to undertake the internship in India appealed to me, as this would expose me to a different culture and environment than I was used to – something I think is necessary to truly understand the term ‘international public health’.

Abela Mahimbo

Master of Public Health / Master of Health Management (Dual Degree)

I had the prestigious opportunity to do a Master of Public Health / Health Management degree at UNSW. Coming from a clinical background, I had limited experience and exposure to the field of public health. I was excited at the commencement of the internship program at WHO SEARO offices as I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to gain hands on experience on issues pertinent to public health.
