Interoperability for Emergency Managers (YMED5006)

Description

Interoperability for Emergency Managers enables student understanding of the multiple technologies and skills utilized by emergency managers to enhance successful coordination and communication between all levels of emergency managers and responders during emergency mitigation, prevention, preparedness, response and recovery operations. 

Course Outcomes

The learning outcomes that students should achieve upon successful completion of this course. 

  1. Be able to explain NIMS and ICS and summarize how they will enhance interoperability during emergency operations;
  2. Be able to identify all stakeholders within the organization’s response community who will benefit from interoperability policies, procedures and equipment
  3. Be able to identify all public stakeholders who will benefit from the implementation best interoperability practices;
  4. Describe the interrelations between an organization’s emergency operations plan and the organization’s communication teams;
  5. Describe ESF15 (External Affairs) including the role of the PIO and explain how ESF15 will enhance interoperability;
  6. Summarize ways in which an organization’s key messages can be created, and disseminated so that the message receivers will clearly understand the messages and take appropriate actions during emergencies;
  7. Be able to differentiate and explain the importance of training, drills, and exercises as methods for enhancing interoperability;
  8. Describe the emergency notification process and the types of services and equipment that are available for installation at an organization’s facilities;
  9. Discuss the communication systems used for communication between the organization’s team members and the emergency response community stakeholders and their applicability limitations;
  10. Discuss sensors, alarms, and audio/visual tools that an organization may choose to implement to provide interoperability during emergencies;
  11. Discuss the importance of evaluating emerging trends regarding interoperability methods and their limitations to ensure the whole community is served;
Teaching strategies

This course is being taught by Arizona State University (ASU), and will be offered to UNSW students. The course will be offered solely online, and utilise the internationally renowned online educational systems of ASU.
