Homeland Security (YMED5001)

Description

This course provides the student with fundamentals of emergency response to suspected terrorist events. This is a historical perspective of terrorist activities and methods by which responders can identify and protect themselves, and the public, from these types of threats. Coordination of responding agencies is also be explored.

This courses will be taught by Arizona State University as part of the PluS Alliance. The course will be taught fully online. 

Course Outcomes

The learning outcomes that students should achieve upon successful completion of this course. 

  1. Define and give examples of what terrorism is and the associated risks involved for emergency responders
  2. Explain the potential outcomes of terrorist incidents
  3. Define the relationship between criminal activity and terrorist acts
  4. Describe the role of the first responder as it relates to local and national emergency response plans
  5. List the resources available and the appropriate notification process for implementing those resources
  6. Describe the steps necessary to protect first responders to terrorist incidents
  7. Define the various types of personnel protective equipment available for terrorism incidents
  8. Define the fundamental components of the Incident Management System as they apply to the management of Weapons of Mass Destruction incidents
  9. Define patient assessment and treatment protocols associated with Weapons of Mass Destruction events
  10. Describe the importance of media relation during Weapons of Mass Destruction incidents
Teaching strategies

This course uses innovative, online materials that provide students the most current and accurate subject-matter and industry information. Since this is an online course, students are expected to participate in a substantive way (e.g. demonstrating engaging synthesis and analysis skills) in weekly discussions devoted to course-relevant topics. To be successful, students must:

  1. Check the course daily
  2. Read announcements
  3. Read and respond to course email messages as needed
  4. Complete assignments by the due dates specified
  5. Communicate regularly with your instructor and peers
  6. Create a study and/or assignment schedule to stay on track
