Short Courses HM Series 1

Series 1 – From Clinicians to Healthcare Leaders
 

Courses in Series 1 examine the foundations of health management from learning about the Australian Healthcare System to understanding how to lead teams and to creating a positive culture within the healthcare environment. This series has been designed for health professionals from public and private health organisations who are making the transition from individual contributor to leader and influencer of people, or who have been leading others within the last 12 months in a clinical context or health care setting.

•   Course 1: Introduction to Australia’s Healthcare System     

With a focus on consumer experience and how the Australian healthcare system is organised and delivered for patients, the course offers participants foundational knowledge of and strategic insight into the politics, structures, governance and funding arrangements within the Australian healthcare system. It is expected that at the end of this introductory course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and insight required for moving into management and leadership roles in any healthcare setting within Australia. Through the progression of this course, participants will reflect on the future of health in Australia and the implications for roles in the leadership and management of health systems and services.

•   Course 2: General Management in Healthcare 

This course offers participants foundational knowledge of and strategic insight into organisational planning and budgeting, resource implementation, service monitoring, program evaluation and innovation. The application of frameworks and tools to support general management in healthcare will enable participants to develop contextualised knowledge of management within the healthcare sector, with a focus on how health services are delivered to optimise consumer experience, value and care quality. At the end of this short course, participants will be equipped with tools and techniques for managing and leading an effective and efficient health service organisation and/or a health-related department or unit. Through the progression of this course, participants will reflect on the future of health in Australia and the implications for healthcare managers and leaders in general management of healthcare.

•   Course 3: Clinicians as Healthcare Leaders

With a focus on preparing clinicians for leadership roles within any healthcare setting in Australia, this course offers participants foundational knowledge of the capabilities required for leading healthcare teams and organisations now and in the future. At the end of this short course, participants will be equipped with an action plan comprising tools and techniques for becoming healthcare leaders in the Australian healthcare system and beyond. Through the progression of this course, participants will reflect on the future of health in Australia and the implications for clinicians transitioning into healthcare management and leadership roles.

•   Course 4: High Performing Teams in Healthcare

With a focus on preparing clinicians for management and leadership roles in healthcare, this course offers participants foundational knowledge of and strategic insight into high performing teams. It is expected that at the end of this short course, participants will be equipped with a roadmap comprising tools and techniques for mobilising, developing and leading high performing teams in healthcare. Through the progression of this course, participants will reflect on the value of teams that demonstrate high performance in a healthcare setting for the future of health in Australia.

•   Course 5: Creating a Culture of Accountability in Healthcare

With a focus on preparing clinicians for management and leadership roles within any healthcare setting in Australia, this course offers participants foundational knowledge of and strategic insight into accountability in healthcare for fulfilling the fiduciary responsibilities to ensure patient safety and minimise harm. At the end of this short course, participants will be equipped with an action plan encompassing tools and techniques for increasing management accountability at all levels to encourage individual and organisational accountability for ensuring safety – moving from a reactive and punitive culture to a learning and accountable culture. Through the progression of this course, participants will reflect on the future of health in Australia and the implications for a learning culture that promotes and practices accountability at all levels of healthcare.
