Mortality Trends in Pacific Island States

Summary: Mortality is an essential measure of the health of populations. Examining mortality trends over time allows governments and development partners to better understand key priorities for intervention, whether health investments are having the desired impact, and how the health of the population is changing over time. This report examines mortality trends through measures of infant mortality rate (IMR) ‐ deaths in children aged <1 year per 1000 live births; under five mortality rate (U5MR) ‐ deaths in children aged less than 5 years per 1000 live births; and life expectancy (LE) ‐ average number of years a person could expect to live given the current conditions for males and females. These are important development indicators, both for the health sector and in a broader development context.

Infant and Under 5 Mortality Calculation Tool

Summary: This tool was designed to aid in the calculation of infant mortality rates and under 5 year mortality rates using various methods. This tool consists of 4 sheets:

  1. an Introductory sheet,
  2. a Data Entry sheet that allows you to enter your own data to be calculated by the tool,
  3. a Results sheet displaying the most commonly required results, and
  4. a Calculations or 'Cals' sheet showing the calculations and results in more details.

Life Table and Probability of Dying Calculation Tool

Summary: This tool was designed to aid in the construction of life tables and calculation of life expectancy, mortality rates including infant mortality rates and other age-standardised death rates, and the cumulative risk of dying over particular age ranges. This tool consists of 4 sheets:

  2. a Data Entry sheet that allows you to enter your own data to be calculated by the tool,
  3. a Results sheet displaying the most commonly required results, and
  4. a Calculations or 'Cals' sheet showing the calculations and results in more details.

Direct Age-Standardisation Calculation Tool
