More than 8,500 people have been killed and many more injured by the two major earthquakes and subsequent tremors in Nepal. Homes, buildings, roads and other important infrastructure have been destroyed leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless, including many of the country’s 37,000 refugees. U.N. officials have reported that millions of people remain in need of basic humanitarian assistance while the monsoon threatens to overwhelm the currently fragile transportation system and undermine ongoing aid efforts. The UNSW Action Group – started from the movement of UNSW Alliance against Ebola (UNSWAAE) in 2014 – is an organisation of students and staff at the UNSW School of Public Health and Community Medicine established to raise awareness and funds to support the efforts in various global public health crises.
