Current Research Topic: The impact and effectiveness of equity focused health impact assessment on policy development within the health system
An estimated 5,000 lives are lost each year in New South Wales alone through early deaths due to differences in socioeconomic status. While many of the causes are related to social, environmental and economic factors, the health system has an important direct role through advocacy, improving access to services and reducing risks for illness. This study looks at the effectiveness of using equity focused health impact assessment to ensure health policies maximise the distribution of benefits to all groups

Current Research Topic: The psychosocial impact of food and nutrition on palliative care patients and their carers

Current Research Topic: The proposed thesis is investigating the psychosocial impact of food and nutrition on palliative care patients with a malignancy and on their carers. Qualitative semi structured interviews and focus groups will be conducted with a phenomenological underpinning. The differing perspectives will be examined in detail.

Current research topic: Dr Vagholkar is a Conjoint Lecturer in the SPHCM. She works in the field of general practice research with a focus on prevention and management of chronic disease. She is currently enrolled in a PhD which is exploring the topic of cardiovascular absolute risk assessment and the impact its use has on management of CV risk factors, in particular prescribing of medications for hypertension and lipids. Dr Vagholkar is an associate investigator on a NHMRC funded trial investigating the impact of nurse-GP partnership in the management of COPD in general practice (2006-2009.)
