14. Textbooks and Course notes
Please ensure that you obtain a copy of your course notes before your first class or workshop or before Week 1 if your course has no face-to-face component. If you are unable to obtain a copy of the course notes before the first class, please ensure that you download the course outline by following the course links from the School course description and availability webpageHU and bring it to class.
Complete sets (includes outline, course notes and readings) of course packs for Public Health and Health Management courses will be made available approximately one week before start of semester for purchase in printed format from the UNSW Bookshop. To locate course notes and textlists for individual courses, visit the Bookshop website, click on ‘SPHCM Textlist’ on the right hand side under ‘Special Textlist Pages’, and type in the course code of your course, for example - for PHCM9012 Health Promotion, type PHCM9012. If required, the Bookshop will mail course notes for a fee.
Course notes in electronic format are also posted in the resources section of the online course on My eLearning Vista. Readings (and some course notes) are often made available progressively through the semester. To access your notes and readings, you need to be enrolled in the course, and have a valid UNSW Student ID and UNIPASS to log in - (see enclosed flyers on UniPass and My eLearning Vista). Please allow 24-48 hours after enrolment in a course for your access to Vista to be activated.
Please note: Students enrolled in Clinical Education programs will be sent information about course notes at the start of each semester
15. How do I enrol in an independent study/ project?
To enrol in an independent study please submit an Application to undertake an Independent Study form which has already been approved by your supervisor to your program administrator. The administrator will process your enrolment - you are not able to do so yourself via myUNSW as approval must be given by the School. Find out more about independent studies.
16. How do I enrol in a cross-institutional course at another university?
- This means applying to enrol in individual courses at another institution, and requesting credit towards your degree at SPHCM.
- To enrol in a cross institutional course you will need to contact the relevant institution for information about their course offerings, cross-institional application procedures, deadlines, fees and also obtain approval from the relevant academic department.
- You will also need to obtain approval from the Postgraduate Coordinator at SPHCM by providing a course description including the credit value of the course, an outline of the assessment required and details about the degree program of which the course is a part. Please forward this information to your program administrator at UNSW who will contact you regarding the outcome of your request.
- On completion of your cross-institutional study, please provide a copy of your result notice to your program administrator so that the credit can be noted on your academic record at UNSW.
- Note that you may be liable for tuition fees at the other institution even though you may eligible for HECS-Help or FEE-Help contributions at UNSW.
- MPH Students who are interested in undertaking Public Health electives at University of Sydney can view MPH elective course outlines and timetables online.
17. How do I enrol in an individual course without applying for a whole degree at UNSW?
- This type of enrolment is called non-award enrolment. There are two types of non-award enrolment:
- Voluntary enrolment - This means applying to enrol in individual courses without applying for a whole degree.
- Cross-institutional enrolment - This means applying to enrol in individual courses at SPHCM and requesting credit towards a degree that you are enrolled in at another institution.
- It is important to ensure that you have approval from your home institution and from UNSW. UNSW application forms and information for applicants are available on the UNSW website.
18. How do I obtain a credit transfer?
- You may apply for a credit transfer on the basis of relevant postgraduate coursework previously completed within the last 10 years. Credit will be granted for up to 50% of the total credit value of the program requirements. For example, an MHM requires 48 units of credit (UOC) for completion, therefore, the maximum amount of credit transfer allowed would be 24 UOC.
- You may be granted credit up to 100% for courses completed in earlier programs in a sequence of UNSW articulated programs.
- To apply for a credit transfer, please supply your program administrator with a course description including the credit value of the course, the assessment required and your results.
- To be considered for credit, the course(s) need to be:
- relevant to the program area
- undertaken at postgraduate level
- completed satisfactorily
- Any credit granted must be consistent with requirements for progression in the relevant program at UNSW and must be approved by the program authority.
19. Students enrolling in an MPH project or a major project within the MPH (Extn) or MHM (Extn)
- You will not be able to enrol yourself in the project online. When you have selected a suitable topic, you need to then draft a brief proposal (one page) outlining the problem to be addressed, project aims and suggested methodology, and send it to your potential supervisor for consideration as an email attachment. Please take a look at the Project Guidelines for Students and Supervisors for further details about the project requirements. You may contact Alan Hodgkinson for academic advise and assistance if you are having difficulty in identifying an appropriate supervisor.
- Once approval has been granted please email your request to enrol within the appropriate enrolment period to your program administrator:
- Please include: name, student number, supervisors’ name, topic and whether you wish to enrol for the whole project in one session or half time, that is, over two sessions.
