Risky Business: a qualitative investigation into HIV risk and vulnerability among sex workers in three Pacific countries

image - Risky Business Hw

This research will investigate drivers of HIV risk among sex workers in three Pacific countries (Palau, Tonga and Tuvalu). There is a paucity of data on sex work in these countries, and while HIV prevalence is low there are indications that sex workers are both marginalised in society and vulnerable to HIV transmission. In order for HIV prevention interventions to be effective and sustainable they must be acceptable to sex workers and take account of their everyday realities. This qualitative study will provide the evidence necessary to develop interventions and services that respond to the local context and circumstances of sex work, and guide an effective response in these countries. It will also increase regional HIV research capacity.
