Welcome to the GlobalHealth@UNSW Symposium

image - Public Health, Human Rights and  Asylum Seeker Detention SymposiumA symposium that took place on 27 May, 2014 to discuss the public health issues of Australia’s asylum seeker program and their relationship to human rights.  It brought together academics, health practitioners, policy-makers and those with hands-on experience in detention centres.

“There is no such thing as a bogus asylum seeker or an illegal asylum seeker. Everybody has a right to seek asylum in another country” (UNHCR)

Dr Michael Grewcock
Senior Lecturer in Criminal Law and Criminology in the  Faculty of Law, UNSW        

Author of Border Crimes: Australia’s war on illicit migrants and several refereed articles and book chapters on Australia’s policies towards refugees. Chief Investigator on the ARC funded Australian Deportation Project and has also undertaken research into the policing of people smuggling.
